I was lucky when the world went into lockdown. I had just so happened to pick a career path that was unaffected by the shift in normality caused by COVID-19. But there are so many people out there who were affected by this in a much more dramatic way. So many jobs where being there in person is a necessity. My sympathy goes out to anyone in this situation.

I can’t say I ever predicted something like this, so it certainly wasn’t why I chose this line of work. However it has got me thinking about my line of work. It really is the ideal choice if anyone is looking for a career path that is able to withstand dramatic changes in circumstance.

Circumstances in the world but also in your personal life. If you find yourself ill and unable to leave the house. Well, you can still make money. If you decide that modern life isn’t for you and you want to head into the wilderness and live in a lodge. Well, you can still earn money if you have a laptop and an internet connection.

There will certainly be people who are looking to retrain and get into something different. And for those people I urge you to try give coding a go.

  • It is higher paid than a lot of other jobs
  • It is easier than a lot of those jobs
  • It doesn’t require a formal education
  • It is a lot more versatile with regards to responding to your, or the world’s situation.
  • There is a lot more variation in your day to day work

How do I get started?

Personally I would just head to YouTube. TheNewBoston is where I started. He has a lot of videos on various programming languages. But it doesn’t stop there, there is an awful lot of free resources on YouTube to get into coding. So don’t waste any money on courses or books — at least to begin with.
